The most common symptoms of hemorrhoids are itching, bleeding and pain in the rectal or anal area. There are, however, different types of this condition and each type is characterized by a different set of symptoms.
External hemorrhoids are usually characterized by rectal pain and bleeding. Blood clots usually form a painful lump under the skin and this clot accounts for both the pain and the streaks of blood that you may see especially when you strain too much to pass a stool in the toilet.
Another type of hemorrhoids is internal hemorrhoids and bleeding is the most common symptom of this condition. You may notice bright red blood either on the tissue or in the bowl after bowel movement. Other symptoms include itching, skin irritation, mild discomfort and pain. If you experience severe pain from the condition, get emergency treatment immediately.
Bear in mind that rectal bleeding and pain are not only symptoms of hemorrhoids but also of anal, rectal, or colon cancer. People who experience these symptoms, especially when coupled with changes in bowel habits, should immediately consult their physician.
